Davis Polk Chief Pro Bono Counsel Amy Starr and Pro Bono Counsel for Humanitarian Immigration Matters Nishan Bhaumik were featured in Law360 discussing their work advising on asylum cases for LGBTQ individuals.

Nishan noted that Davis Polk’s pro bono services are meant to provide support to underserved populations who otherwise do not have access to the resources of a large law firm. “We have a long history of supporting refugees and those fleeing violence, and LGBTQ asylum-seekers are undoubtedly among the most vulnerable,” he explained.

Amy highlighted that Davis Polk has never once lost an asylum case. “LGBTQ asylum-seekers, especially, have fewer resources as they encounter stigma from family and communities and face additional challenges accessing immigration attorneys with the necessary sensitivity and expertise needed on LGBTQ asylum matters,” she said.

Over the past few years, more than 75 Davis Polk attorneys have been involved with LGBTQ immigration cases, in various offices and departments.
