Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. Evening and weekend availability is required given nature and pace of staffing requests.

Position Summary

The Manager, Professional Development - Tax will work closely with the partners in the group to oversee work allocation, utilization, performance and development, as well as organizing practice group events. In addition, this individual will collaborate with other members of the Professional Development team to implement our performance review process, onboarding and integration of new attorneys.

Essentials Duties and Responsibilities

Typical responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

TAX GROUP – The Tax group includes 10 partners, 12 counsel and approximately 40 associates.

  • Work with staffing partners to manage the work allocation process for attorneys in the group.
  • Monitor utilization and track associates’ experience in order to maximize the variety of work, increase exposure to different partners, counsel and senior associates, and develop new skills.
  • Manage master staffing chart tracking assignments.
  • Regularly meet with tax associates to determine training needs, provide career development and assess morale.
  • Keep track of and staff vacation coverage for Counsel and Associates.
  • Maintain counsel and associates monthly hours report.
  • Assist with onboarding and orientation of new attorneys.
  • Maintain department “key dates” calendar which tracks social events and other Professional Development events.
  • Keep track of major life events for Tax Department lawyers.
  • Work with the relevant Tax partners and counsel as well as the Training team to manage and help facilitate associate training programs for all seniority levels; work with that team to develop, enhance and implement new trainings as needed to support associate development.
  • Assist with weekly CLE programs as needed.
  • Collaborate with others in the Professional Development department to manage the performance evaluation process for Tax associates and counsel.
  • Work with associates to implement feedback received and connect with internal coaching resources as needed.
  • Manage the Career Advisor Program for the Tax Group.
  • Manage the Tax associate multi-tiered mentoring program.

GENERAL/MISC

  • Assist Tax Group with planning regular social gatherings.
  • Assist with staffing of the “shelf” and other designated assignments as needed.
  • Provide staffing coverage for other groups as needed.
  • Miscellaneous ad hoc projects.
Qualifications / Position Requirements
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong time-management skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks quickly and efficiently.
  • Detail-oriented, organized and driven, with the desire to take ownership of projects and responsibilities, but to also work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Able to propose creative solutions to challenging problems.
  • Ability to maintain highly sensitive or confidential information
  • Ability to establish rapport and build relationships and credibility with internal stakeholders.
  • Excellent leadership skills and ability to project confidence in high-stress environment.
  • Availability during standard office hours and the ability to respond to email promptly outside of standard office hours and on weekends is essential.
  • Familiarity with Excel and comfortable creating and presenting PowerPoint presentations expected. 
Education and/or Experience
  • JD degree preferred.
  • A minimum of three to five years’ post-graduate experience in a law firm or professional services organization expected.
  • Familiarity with tax a plus.
  • Experience with collaborating with partners in a large law firm setting expected.
Compensation

The expected base salary for this position ranges from $200,000 - $225,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, licensure or certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. Davis Polk offers a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.
