Mr. Hockett is a litigation partner in Davis Polk’s Northern California office. He has over 30 years of experience representing companies, boards, and individual officers and directors in a broad range of high-stakes commercial litigation and investigation matters, including in the areas of antitrust and unfair competition, intellectual property, securities, consumer class actions, contracts, data breaches and professional malpractice. He also has advised clients in connection with government investigations and the antitrust aspects of mergers and acquisitions.

Mr. Hockett has represented more than a dozen Fortune 50 companies, and has handled cases in over 35 jurisdictions nationwide. His experience spans a variety of industries, including technology, e-commerce, finance, telecommunications, media, sports, professional services and manufacturing.  He has also served as a mediator, arbitrator and court-appointed Special Master.

Mr. Hockett heads Davis Polk’s antitrust practice on a global basis, and is the former global head of a 450-lawyer litigation practice at another firm.  From 2013 to 2014, he was Chair of the 8,500-member ABA Section of Antitrust Law.

  • Litigated dozens of class actions involving products such as banking and financial services, computers, software, microprocessors, wireless and wireline services, cable TV, optical disk drives, memory cards, TFT-LCDdisplays, medical equipment, seafood, commercial airlines and chemical manufacturing
  • Won judgment for wireless carrier in connection with $2.7 billion antitrust class action alleging price fixing in text messaging services
  • Won judgment for financial services firm in connection with multibillion-dollar securities fraud claims arising from mortgage-backed securities investments
  • Won judgment for telecommunications company alleging imposition of discriminatory universal connectivity charges in violation of the Federal Communications Act
  • Won judgment defeating billion-dollar damages claims arising out of alleged unlawful bidding activity in FCC radio spectrum auctions
  • Won judgment for Japanese trading company defeating claims by former prisoners of war and civilian internees in Japan during World War II
  • Won judgment for computer manufacturer accused of monopolization
  • Tried and won defense judgment in antitrust action filed to stop newspaper merger and related divestiture
  • Lead counsel in a variety of securities class action and derivative claims in industries such as accounting, e-commerce, banking and telecommunications
  • Lead counsel in more than a dozen patent lawsuits involving a variety of technologies, including computers, software, e-commerce, medical devices, optical networking and telecommunications
  • Lead antitrust counsel for several multibillion-dollar mergers
  • Lead counsel in defending large law firms against professional malpractice claims
  • Lead outside counsel for major sports regulatory body
