The American Lawyer has named Davis Polk partner James Rouhandeh “Litigator of the Week” for his representation of Proskauer Rose against claims brought in the Northern District of Texas on behalf of a putative class of purchasers of certificates of deposit, who claim that they were defrauded through a Ponzi scheme run by Robert Allen Stanford and his group of companies.
In a landmark decision, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals held—for the first time—that the Texas attorney immunity doctrine is a true immunity from suit and not merely an affirmative defense. The dismissal with prejudice ended seven years of litigation in federal district court, the Fifth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.
Rouhandeh is head of Davis Polk’s Litigation Department and a member of the firm’s three-person Management Committee.
