Matthew J. Bacal
Associate

Mr. Bacal is an associate in Davis Polk’s Corporate Department and is assigned to the Intellectual Property Group. He advises clients on intellectual property, technology and media-related issues arising from corporate and commercial transactions, such as mergers and acquisitions, licensing and development arrangements, joint ventures and collaborations, financings, restructurings, and capital markets offerings. He has a particular focus on negotiating and drafting strategic intellectual property licensing, development and other commercial arrangements relating to media rights, content distribution, branding, software and other technology. Mr. Bacal also counsels clients in connection with intellectual property disputes and other advisory matters, particularly in the areas of copyright and Internet law.

In his pro bono practice, Mr. Bacal provides intellectual property advice and counseling for a variety of organizations, including probono.net, Playwrights Horizons and Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts.

    • Negotiating media rights agreements between Comcast’s regional sports networks and various professional sports franchises, as well as advising on a range of other programming matters on behalf of Golf Channel, Versus, G4 and E!, among others
    • The ongoing development and licensing, through Comcast’s joint ventures with Motorola, of certain conditional access technologies utilized in the cable industry
