Our training program is comprehensive and provides a broad framework for the on-the-job training that takes place day to day as a matter of course. Our program offers a "core curriculum" of courses for all corporate and litigation associates, as well as more advanced, interactive training for mid-level associates in each of our primary practice groups. In 2007, we offered over 300 different programs on a wide variety of subjects. Training is easily accessible—lawyers can attend in person, call in or join by video-conference from a branch office or other outside location, borrow a CD or videotape of most programs from our library or watch many of the programs via a webcast available on the firm's intranet. Most of the courses are developed and taught by Davis Polk lawyers.
In addition, we have created special programs for lawyers at key milestones in their careers. Lawyering 101 is a week-long series of seminars and social events held each fall to introduce new associates worldwide to Davis Polk and its people. Lawyering 301 and 501, programs delivered after three and five years, respectively, are designed to help associates throughout the firm understand what they can expect as they make the transition to mid-level and senior associates.
Lawyers are also encouraged to attend outside seminars and programs, such as those offered by the Practising Law Institute (PLI) and the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA).
To provide assistance and encouragement to new lawyers, all first-year associates are assigned an associate mentor and a partner mentor. The associate mentor’s role is to welcome the new associate to the firm, and be available to assist with any introductory issues or questions the new associate may have. Within three months of their arrival at the firm, associates are matched with a partner mentor. Partner mentors meet regularly with associates to discuss work or life at the firm, in particular relating to the associate’s professional experiences and development.
In addition, our full-time director of associate development is available to work with each associate at the firm. Our director has over 15 years of experience at Davis Polk and she, together with several other experienced administrators, works with individual associates in all of the practice groups to define and promote the optimal progression of each associate in terms of assignments, skills development, client and partner contact, and overall professional development.
