Davis Polk’s Pro Bono Program Highlighted by AP
1/19/2011

The success of Davis Polk’s pro bono program was the focus of a January 16, 2011, Associated Press article discussing the need for pro bono services. The article, which also appeared on The Wall Street Journal's website, noted that Davis Polk lawyers logged approximately 70,000 hours of pro bono work in 2009 alone, placing the firm at the top of a New York State Bar Association list of firms involved in pro bono work. Ronnie Abrams, Davis Polk’s Special Counsel for Pro Bono and a former Assistant U.S. Attorney, and Elyse Cowgill, a third-year associate at Davis Polk, were also featured prominently in the article.

Under Abrams’ leadership, Davis Polk has obtained significant victories for its pro bono clients, including battered women, Holocaust survivors and wrongfully accused death row inmates. Cowgill, who recorded more than 1,000 pro bono hours in 2009, most recently helped two women from Guinea successfully obtain asylum in the United States.
